Howard James Hemming was born in 1868 at Burford in Oxfordshire. He was baptised at Burford parish church on 1 January 1868 as the son of William and Mary Ann Hemming, of Burford. His father was described as an engineer. [1] [2] [3] [4]
His mother died early in 1870.
At the time of the 1871 census, Howard Hemming was living at 9 Priory Lane in Burford as a boarder in the household of James and Susan Burden. His age was given as 2, implying a birth date in 1868 or 1869. His birthplace was given as Burford, Oxfordshire. [5]
In 1881 Howard was living in the High Street at Witney in Oxfordshire with his widowed aunt Charlotte Long and her son George Long. His age was given as 12, implying a birth date in 1868 or 1869. His birthplace was given as Burford, Oxfordshire. He was at school. [6]
In July 1900 an Oxfordshire local newspaper, based on a notice in a South African paper, said that Howard Hemming had been commissioned as a lieutenant of the First City Volunteers, Grahamstown. It added that he was the son of the late Mr William Hemming, engineer, of Burford, and nephew of Charles East, engineer, and had been educated at the Wesleyan school in Witney. He was apprenticed as a draper in Hampshire, and subsequently represented a Witney blanket manufacturer in South Africa, before moving into gold mining. [3]
Howard James Hemming (bachelor, aged 35, born Burford, Oxford[shire], England) and Isabella Gordon Nevay (spinster, aged 24, born Mary Hill, Glasgow, Scotland) were married at Johannesburg on 23 March 1904. [4]
Howard worked at the Gold Assay Office, Germiston, East Rand, Transvaal.
His "aunt" Charlotte Long was apparently born Charlotte Lay or Charlotte Slatter. Her sister Susanna Lay married a William Hemming, and they had a son called William, who was Howard's father. (I think that makes Charlotte Long Howard's great aunt in fact.)
The Charles East who is described as his uncle in 1900 appears to be the husband of Fanny Hemming, sister of the younger William Hemming mentioned previously.
