Lily was born on 9 Dec, 1898 at Surrey, England. Her birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1899 in the Camberwell district.^[1] She was the daughter of John and Rosa Hemmings. She was baptised on 8 Jan, 1899 at St Antony's Church, Nunhead, Surrey, England. Her family were residing at 50 Tapperfield Road, Nunhead, Surrey, England, and her father's occupation was listed as traveller.

Lily married James Hector Clive Black, son of John McGregor Black, on 23 Nov, 1918 at St Augustine's Church, Highbury, Middlesex, England. Lilly was described as being 19 years of age, and residing at 59 Leconfield Road, Highbury, Middlesex, England. Rosa Hemmings, Frank ?, and Emily Hemmings were witnesses to the marriage.^[2]
