Biography

John Hampton of Ballywilly and Mary Anne Henderson of Ballytrue were married on 21 Feb 1843 at Kilmore Church of Ireland, co Armagh. Witnesses were Christopher Hampton and Dudley Hampton.[1] They were married by licence.[2]

John and Mary Anne lived in the townland of Ballytrue from the 1850s onwards. They had eight children, most of whom emigrated to New Zealand.

Mary Ann Hampton, age 77, farmer's widow, died on 13 May 1897 at Ballytrue of old age and senile debility. Her death was registered by her son Robert Dudley Hampton.[3]

Research Note

The death of Mary's son Robert Dudley Hampton was registered by his cousin Patrick Henderson,[4] and so Patrick's father John and Mary Ann were most likely siblings.

Mary Anne was therefore likely one of the children of James and Anne Henderson of Ballytrue:

  • Mary Anne born 1819/20, living in Ballytrue in 1843.
  • John born 1819/20, took over his father's lease at Ballytrue after his death. His father is named on his marriage certificate as James Henderson of Ballytrue.
  • James (Jemmy) born 1826, living in Ballytrue in 1856. His father is named on his marriage certificate as James Henderson of Ballytrue.
