Mary Hendy, known as Maria, was born in the March quarter of 1852 in Keynsham, Somerset to Arthur Hendy (1820-1905) and Eliza (Sheppard) Hendy (abt.1824-1891). She was one of seven children. ^[1] Maria was baptized on 11 April 1852 in the parish church of St James, Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire. ^[2] Her father was a coal miner. .^[3]

By 1871, Maria was working as a servant in the house of William Budding in Gloucester. ^[4]

In 1877 Mary had an illegitimate son, Worthy.

In 1881 she was listed as living with son Worthy and niece Emma Hendy in Soundwell. Mary and Emma were laundresses. ^[5]

Maria married Morris Britton (1850-1905) in the September quarter of 1884 in Keynsham, Somerset. ^[6] She continued her work as a laundress and by 1891 was living with her husband and three children on Albert Road in Mangotsfield. She step-son, Worly, was also part of the household. Her husband worked as a quarryman labourer. ^{[7] [8]}

Maria's husband, Morris, died, aged 55, in the September quarter of 1905 in Keynsham. .^[9] She continued working as a laundress, and the rest of the family stayed together living on Albert Road. ^[10]

Maria was alive and living in Gloucestershire for the 1921 Census. ^[11] She died, aged 81, in the March quarter of 1933 in Keynsham. ^[12]
