Biography

Joan Hart Henman is born on January 19, 1905, in Parry Sound, Ontario [2]. She is the daughter of David Hart Henman (1843 or 1850-1929) and Louie or Louise Austin Webb (c1866-?) [2]. At six years of age, Joan can be found in the 1911 census in Parry Sound living with her parents, one sister and one 20-year old adopted sister [3]. Parry Sound, on the shores of Georgian Bay, is about 225 kilometres north of Toronto. It is the supply centre for communities scattered around the edges of the Bay and it is suspected that Joan’s father is in the business of supplying these communities by boat.

The father, David Henman, came from Bedford, England (about 100 kilometers north of London). He had emigrated from England to Canada in 1870 and established some kind of trading company in Parry Sound. He lived for a time in the United States before coming to Canada. His wife, Louie (some sources spell it “Louise”) was also born in England (Chippinghorton, 100 kilometres plus to the northwest of London) and she emigrated to Canada in 1901. Louie was David’s second wife. David and Louie were married in 1901 in Barrie, Ontario and the marriage record spells the name as “Louie”[4].

Joan has not been found in the 1921 Canadian census records. We know that, in 1928, Joan crosses into the United States [5]. She is travelling to Liverpool, Ohio and, although the writing is not clear, she appears to be travelling to Liverpool to take a job at a hospital. So perhaps she has had some training as a nurse. We also see Joan crossing into the United States in January 1929 [6]. And in October 1929, she sails from Liverpool England to Montréal [7].

On May 27, 1931, Joan marries William Gordon Loveless (1907-1991) in Toronto [1][2]. They have three children:

• Marilyn Joan Loveless 1932>2012 + (1955) James Ernest Alexander 1932-2012

• Patricia Anne Loveless 1934-? + Rudolf Emil Vogel

• Dixie Lee Loveless 1936-1975 + Dr. John Anthony Bates

The family shows up in the 1940 United States census in Montpelier, Vermont [8]. All three children in the family are born in Vermont. In the 1950 census records, Joan and William and the three children are still living in Montpelier [9]. William and Joan are now US citizens.

William has some sort of job as an agricultural agent, first for Washington County in Vermont but, at some point, for the US government. By 1957 he and Joan are livening in Bagdad where William is an agricultural attaché to the US Consul in Iraq. At some later point, they are living in Morocco.

William dies 1991, in Florida. Joan dies on October 13, 1999 [2]. They are buried together in the Serenity Gardens Memorial Park, Largo, Pinellas County, Florida [11].
