Biography
Moses Henniker was baptised on 23 Feb 1703 at St Mary the Virgin, Chatham, Kent, England and was the son of John and Sarah.[1]
Family:
Moses appears to have married a wife called Sarah, sometime before 1728. Two sons, both named John, were baptised to this couple in 1728 and 1731.[2][3]
Occupation:
Moses was a shipwright and mastmaker. He is recorded as having been apprentice master to John Walton at Chatham in 1746 and William Diprose at Rochester in 1753, and described as a shipwright on both occasions. In 1756, Moses' occupation was given as Master Mastmaker when he took on Mathew Wolfinton as an apprentice at Chatham.[4][5]
He was appointed Master Mastmaker at HM Naval Dockyard, Chatham on 5 June 1755, a position he held until his death four years later.[6]
Moses Henniker died on 22 Sept 1759[7] and was buried on 26 Sept at St Mary the Virgin, Chatham.[8]
Research Notes
Moses was the last of a steady stream of children baptised at Chatham to John and Sarah Henniker between Dec 1671 and 1702/3. They incl John b./d.1685 and John b1691, and there is not obviously a second family or second generation. For all these children to be one Sarah's she would have been about 48 when Moses was born if she was around 16 at the birth of her first child. Freereg search No marriage record for John and Sarah has been found - the only marriage for John Henniker is to Elizabeth Drew in 1672/3.
