Biography
Anteny Hensley is a part of US Black heritage.
Anteny was the slave of John Hensley. His parents and origins are not known. Local lore tells that he was purchased at Beller's Stand in Boone County, Arkansas (or New Orleans) around 1844, then presented as a gift to John's daugher, Louisa when she married Bill Wyatt in 1848.[1][2]
He was used as a jockey and tended the horses.
In 1900 he was living in Searcy County with Newt Wyatt (1861-1914), son of a former Hensley slave, Parthenia and her white owner, Bill Wyatt.[3] In 1910, he was shown as a servant of Lillie Treadwell, daughter of Louisa Hensley Wyatt.[4]
He passed away in 1914. At the time of his death, he was living with the family of Ern Cash, a great-grandson of John Hensley. He is buried at Hall Cemetery in Searcy County, Arkansas.[5]
