Biography

George (Hepburn) Hepburn of Monkrig is a member of Clan Hepburn.

George was baptised at Haddington on the 28th of December 1626. Eldest son and heir. Dr.George Hepburn of Wester Monkrig was retoured (number 236) heir to Patrick Hepburn of Wester Monkrig, his father, in the lands of Wester Monkrig and 15 acres of land in Easter Monkrig, in the Lordship of Newbottle, on the 15th of September 1654. George Hepburn of Wester Monkrig, doctor of medicine, was retoured heir to Margaret Lamb, relict of Patrick Hepburn of Wester Monkrig, his mother, on the 5th of June 1675.[1]

Dr. George Hepburn had sasine of Easter and Wester Monkrig as heir of his father on a Precept from Chancery dated 13th of October 1654. He was appointed a member on various commissions issued by the Scottish Parliament about 1661 for the trial of witches. The epitaph on his tomb is recorded in Monteith's "Theater of Mortality".[2]

The Old Parish Registers for Haddington record that Dr. George Hepburn of Monkrig stood as witness to the baptism of the first three children of James Lauder, Sheriff-Clerk, Provost, and M.P., for Haddington: Jean Lauder, 20/9/1675, Robert Lauder 6/6/1676, and Euphemie Lauder, 19/1/1678.

The testament Dative of George Hepburn of Wester Monkrig, M.D., who died later in 1678, was given up by Helen Swinton, his relict; Patrick Hepburn eldest lawful son, cautioner, confirmed that there were £2300 of debts due to them.[3]
