Biography

Josephine was born about 1860. She was the daughter of woodcarver John Herkomer and Agnes Koenig. The 1880 census gives her occupation as school teacher. She married Francis Herrick. They lived in Cleveland.

Obituary

"Mrs. Josephine Herrick, widow of Dr. Francis Hobart Herrick of the Western Reserve University faculty, died yesterday in Oakland, Cal. She was 92. Member of an early Cleveland family, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Herkomer, Her father was an artist and wood carver here. In 1897 she was married to Dr. Herrick, who, 17 years earlier, founded the department of biology at W. R. U. An authority on ornithology, he died here in 1940. Surviving Mrs. Herrick are a son, Francis, of Oakland; a daughter, Mrs. Agnes Platenius of Ithaca, N. Y., and four grandchildren." - Plain Dealer Aug 31 1952; Cleveland Necrology File, Reel #117 [1]
