Biography

James was born about 1798. James Herman ... He passed away in 1862. [1] [2] Family tradition says that James Herman was born in South Carolina and he moved to Kentucky with his parents when he was small. They later moved to Lawrence County, Tennessee. The family later moved to what is now Lauderdale County, Alabama around 1807 and settled near Center Star. Prior researcher Ruby Pantalone noted that she found census records in 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 in Alabama, but citations were not provided. [3]

Marriage of Sally Price to James Harmon on 3 Feb 1823 with Wm Cook JUP presiding recorded in Book 1 page 73 of the Lauderdale County, Alabama Old Marriage Books as copied by the WPA in the 1930s. [4]

The 1860 census lists James, Sarah, Stephen, James, and Benjamin F. and Jeph. Jeph may be Joseph based on the stated ages. The death certificate lists Joseph's name as J.F.

James is listed as James C. but is most likely James R.A. Other children were provided in the Pantalone document [6] Descendants should be added to the tree as citations become available.

Will The will appears to have been written two days before his death.

I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Sarah, all my household and XXX furniture during her natural life, two cows and calves xxx two plows and xxxx ten head of sheep, twenty head of choice xxxx hogs and all of my poultry. I also give to my beloved wife Sarah during xxx the following real estate xxxx land to xxx to my two sons, James R. A. and Benjamin F to wit starting at the ford of xx below the river running due east to the eastern boundary line, xxx down the creak a peach tree, xxx west to the western boundary line, including all North of said line except eighty acres, known as the Dupree land, and forty acres known as the divided land between us and J. Springer.

I give unto my beloved son James R. A. our bay colt and saddle and bridle, our black sow and pigs. Third Give to my beloved son Benjamin F. our Gray cold and our saddle and bridle to be given him out of my estate by my executor at the age eighteen years, our black sow pigs. Fourth, the remainder of my estate after paying any debts if any, my will is for it to be divided equally among all my children. Firth, I do xxx my friend xxx to be the executor of this my last will and xxx I testimony whereof I have to this my last will and testament contained our sheet of and where, I subscribe xxx and my seal this eighth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight and sixty two. Probate Court 1863. This day personally appeared in this court William Hammond and John Dupree subscribing xxx to the foregoing will of James Herman xxx being xx the xxx paper being presented to them, said testified that the said Herman and his work thereto in their presence that they witnessed it in his presence and before each other, xxx that he pronounced it to be his last will and testament ad that at the time of signing the said James Herman was of sound mind and disposing memory. All of which facts the said Mr. Hammond and John Dupree swore to me before this 5th day of Xxxx 1863. [7]
