In 1946, Homer and Zelma and Wendell moved to Three Rivers from Bishop. They bought 10 acres of land from Dr. E.E. Wilson on a hill 3 miles south of Three Rivers and built their home there. The hill later became known as "Herring Hill.".

Homer operated 1/2 of the 11,000 Herring Ranch at Simmons in partnership with his brother, Clyde. While Clyde was interested in developing the land surface and minerals. Homer was interested in building an outstanding herd of cattle. When they divided their partnership in 1957, Homer had his foundation herd of cattle. He had experimented with two breeds of cattle that had been bred for South Texas range land--Kleberg's Santa Gertrudis and Lasater's Beefmasters. He chose the Beefmaster breed for his herd. When Homer died on November 7, 1975, he not only had built one of the finest herds of Beefmaster cattle in the nation, but he had helped many small ranchers get into the breeding business including Nolan Ryan.

Homer was one of the founders of the Beefmaster Breeders Universal, Lone Star Beefmaster Breeders Association and South Texas Beefmaster Breeders Association. In Houston in 1971, at the Lone Star Beefmaster Breeders Association sale, Homer sold a bull that was at that time the all-time record selling Beefmaster bull.

Upon his death, Homer's cattle herd was sold to Wallace Harrell of Harrell Cattle Company in Gonzales, Texas.

Herring-1306 and Herring-1209 appear to represent the same person because: Herring-1209 has more information than Herring-1309 and all my research indicates 1209 is correct.
