Death of Mr. F. Herrmann.
We record with great regret, the death of Mr. Francis Herrmann, senior, an old and widely-esteemed townsman, which sad event occurred at his late residence, Elgin-street, South Maitland, yesterday morning at 4 o'clock. For the past two years, the deceased gentleman had not enjoyed the best of health, but for the last two months his ailment became serious and practically confined him to his home. During the week. he took a very serious turn, and all the members of his family were summoned to his bedside, but a day or two afterwards he rallied and appeared better and brighter, and it was not thought his end was so near. He chattered freely with those about him on Saturday afternoon and evening, but took a bad turn again during the night or early morning, and passed away unexpectedly. The late Mr. Herrmann was a native of Germany, coming to this state with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Herrmann, when an infant two years old. He was in his 69th year when he died. The family lived for many years at Cooks River, near Sydney, but when about 17 years of age, the deceased came to reside in Maitland, where he lived for the past 52 years, with the exception of a short period spent on the Hill-End and Tambaroora gold fields, in the days when gold mining was booming, being present when the largest nugget of gold was discovered in Beyer's and Holterman's claims at Hill End, which he helped to carry. He served his time in the tinsmithing business with his brother-in-law in Maitland, the late Mr. Henry Nies, and afterwards went into partnership with the late Mr. Charles Ayliffe, and afterwards on his own account. He remained in business for 45 years, retiring about two years ago, the business then passing into the hands of his son, Mr. Frank Herrmann. He was an industrious and indefatigable worker, and very successful in his business, yet he found time to participate in nearly all branches of social activities and sports. He was a member of the St. John's Cathedral Choir for a great many years, a prominent and devout churchman, a trustee of the Maitland School of Arts, a director of the Maitland Permanent Building Society, a member of the old Fire Brigade, of the Maitland Band, of the Maitland Rifle Club, secretary for a long time of the Maitland Bowling Club, and for a considerable period treasurer of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows. He was an excellent shot with a rifle and won many prizes and trophies on the various ranges in the district and at Randwick, while at athletic sports he was also successful. He was an enthusiastic support of football and cricket, a good amateur billiardist, and a member of the Newcastle Jockey Club for many years. He was one of the Hunter River representatives of a cricket match played on the Albion ground against an English eleven, and possessed a fine collection of trophies won in various branches of sport. He was of a very genial temperament, and made a host of friends, by whom he was greatly respected. He was twice married, his first wife dying about five years ago. He leaves a widow and family of four sons and six daughters, and one brother and two sisters survive, with whom much sympathy has been expressed. The sons are Messrs. Frank and Joseph (Maitland), Phillip and Reginald (Sydney), and the daughters are Sister Mary Clare of the Convent of Mercy, Branxton; Mrs. W. Maquire, Singleton; Mrs. P. Benham, Eskbank, Lithgow; Sister Mary Porpeton, Dominican Convent, West Maitland; and Misses Emily (Sydney) and Kitty Hermann (West Maitland). His only surviving brother is Mr. Foldeno Herrmann, of Sydney, and his sisters Mrs. Napper, of Rockdale, and Mrs. Ackermann, of Tamworth. There are 18 grandchildren in the family. The funeral is announced to leave St. John's Cathedral tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon at three o'clock. A solemn requiem mass will be celebrated in the cathedral at eight o'clock tomorrow morning for the repose of his soul. Members of the President branch Grand United Order of Oddfellows, and of the Maitland Bowling Club, are invited to attend the funeral.
