Not to be confused with Eliza Jane (Brown) Hersey born 9 Apr 1824 in Boston and Married Henry Miles Hersey.
Eliza was born in 1826 in Massachusetts.
She was the child of Eliza Bushing Jones and Charles Hersey, and the wife of Massachusetts Governor John Albion Andrew. [1]
She enthusiastically supported her husband's groundbreaking work to form the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry - the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color - and donated her time and money to the regiment's well-being.[2] She served on the "Ladies' Committee" with several men and women who helped supply necessities to the soldiers at the Readville, Massachusetts training camp for the regiment.[3]
She passed away in 1898 and is buried at Hingham Cemetery in Hingham, Massachusetts. [4]
