Biography

In some records the birth surname is shown as Hertzogin or Hertzogen.

[Research Note: From studies of families of 18th-century Prussian immigrants, ^[1] we know that there was a custom in at least part of that region to distinguish female children by adding the suffix -in to their surname. It therefore seems likely that Catharina was descended from immigrants named Hertzog who practiced that custom, and that she acquired the surname Hertzogin in some records.]
