OBITUARY
Mrs. S. Chapman
We all heard with deep regret of the passing of Mrs. Emily Jane Chapman (Mrs. Sam Chapman), one of our pioneer residents. She was born at Clarendon, the fourth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Hewett, and at an early age the family moved to Blackwood, where she lived until her death. It is recalled that her wedding was solemnised in the first Wesleyan Chapel here; it stood then on the site now occupied by the E. S. and A. Bank, and was subsequently towed along to its present position as the Methodist Hall. The couple celebrated their golden wedding last year.
Mrs. Chapman has played a big and public-spirited part in the life of this community, and amongst her many activities are numbered the presidency of the Red Cross for a large part of the war, and her teaching for many years in the Methodist Sunday School.
She had the welfare of the Minda patients very much at heart and until last year took a large share in the organising of their annual party.
To Mrs. Chapman's family, her many friends, and all those who will miss her we offer very sincere condolences.
- --The Coromandel, 23 April 1954[6]
She was buried at Centennial Park Cemetery.[7]
