Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

William Heys was christened on 17 Apr 1835 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of Thomas and Margaret Heys. His father's occupation was recorded as stone mason, and the family's address as Eccleston. He appears to have been their only child.

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Thatto Heath, Eccleston. Thomas was working as a stone mason; William was six. Also in the household were Anna Leather (aged 55-59 and of independent means) and 1-year-old Esther Rooke. Anna was probably the same person as Ann Latham, who was living with them in 1851, and therefore their aunt.

By March 30th 1851, William's parents were still in Eccleston but he wasn't in their household.

By April 7th 1861, William was back with his parents, who were living in Schools Lane, Eccleston. Thomas was working as a quarry man, William was a draper. His parents had a servant, 14-year-old Mary Ann Alcock; and their niece, 8-year-old Elenor Ann Finney (born in South America) was also in the household.
