Biography

Babe (Hickey) Andrew was an Oregonian.

Wilma Hickey was one of 12 children. She was called "Babe" all her life as she was the baby of the family. Her early life was spent in Cairo, Malheur, Oregon.

After she married Jack White in 1939, they lived several places in and around Baker County with Jack doing several things to support their growing family, including driving truck, mining and logging (which ultimately caused his death).

When she was widowed in 1965, she still had several children living at home. The next year, 4 Jan 1966, she married Virgil Logan. But by 1971 she and Virgil divorced.

Later that year, 11 Sep 1971, she married Cecil Kirkwood. That marriage didn't last and she was divorced. On 21 Nov 1974 in Winnemucca, Nevada she married Ivan Elwin Andrew. They were divorced 18 Jun 1976 in Grant County, Oregon.

At this point she elected to live on her own with whatever children came and went in her house on 2015 Colorado Pl. in Baker City, Oregon. She had a fondness for gardening and had a huge vegetable garden as well as lots of lovely roses. Her family brought in elk, venison, game birds and fish as well. Her family raved about her fried chicken and beans.

At the time of her death, her oldest son, Gary was living with her.

From her obituary in either the Democrat Herald or Record-Courier: Wilma LaRee “Babe” White Andrew, 80, of Baker City, died July 7, 2004 at her home.

Her graveside service will be 11:00 AM Monday at mount hope cemetery. Pastor Lenny Spooner of the Baker City Church of the Nazarene will officiate. The gravesite will be dedicated by Bob Brady of Baker City.

Babe was born October 9, 1923, to William Thomas Hickey and Emile Cole Hickey on the family farm near Ontario where she grew up with 11 brothers and sisters.

She married Jack White on June 22nd, 1939. They made their home in Baker City where they raised eight sons and one daughter. Babe was a loving mother who enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and family functions.

Survivors include her daughter, Sherry White of Baker City; Sun, Gary White of Baker City, son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Debbie White of Baker City, son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Claudette White of Waitsburg Washington, son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Cecilia white of Baker City, son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Sharon White of Pasco WA, son, Monty White of Baker City, and son and daughter-in-law Randy and Carol White of Waitsburg, Washington; a sister Sally down of Pasco WA; 26 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack White; And his son, Richard white of Portland. Memorial contributions may be made to doernbecher Children's Hospital through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City OR 97814.
