"Charles Henry Ross was a mariner who left Peckham and traveled south to the coast in pursuit of a carreer as a merchant seaman. He worked on private yachts, and presumably in the Merchant Service. He met his first wife Mary Ann Hinks (1840-1877) in Portsmouth. They were married in 1861 and lived in Alverstoke. They moved to Southampton in 1865. They had six children. Mary died in 1877 at the age of 37." [1]
