Biography

John was born in 1865. John Higgins ... He passed away in 1938.

17 May 1938

GLOUCESTER

Death of Mr. J. R. Higgins

LEADING CITIZEN

GLOUCESTER, Tuesday.

Mr. J. R. Higgins, of Faulkland, died at his residence after an illness of some months. He was a leading citizen of the district and was shire president and a councillor of Gloucester Shire since its inception in 1906.

The deceased had extensive grazing properties throughout this district, and was a keen judge of beef cattle and horses. He was also interested in fruit growing, and at all his properties there are flourishing orchards.

He was president of the A.H. and P. Society at different periods, and at the time of his death was president, as well as a president of nearly every other public movement in the district. He lived for Gloucester and urged its claims and potentialities in the right quarter whenever an opportunity occurred, and had the satisfaction or seeing a small village grow into a bustling, modern town.

The interment was made in the Gloucester cemetery, and representatives of every public body, as well as a large number of friends, attended the last rites at the graveside. Mrs. Higgins and Messrs. H. T. and L. Higgins (sons), and Mrs. N. D. Thomas (daughter), survive him.[1]

28 May 1915

Gloucester Fire.

The beautiful homestead of Mr J. R. Higgins, of 'Faulklands,' Gloucester River, was totally destroyed by fire, on Saturday morning last. The fire was discovered about 2 a.m. by Mr Herb Higgins. who was sleeping on the verandah, but it had such a hold that it was impossible to do anything, except save a few valuables out of Mr Higgins office. At the time of the fire Mr and Mrs Higgins and daughter were absent from home, and the only person on the premises was Mr Herb Higgins, son. Mr Higgins seems to be most unfortunate with his furniture as this is the third time that it has been destroyed. One beautiful set of furniture went down with the ill-fated 'Maitland' which was wrecked about 30 years, ago in the 'Maitland Gale.' An other lot was burnt in the house it was stored, and now the third lot has gone. Much sympathy is felt for Mr Higgins in the loss of his beautiful home, which money can not replace. The house and furniture were only partly insured.[2]
