Biography

Genealogically Defined

James Charles was born on the 9th June 1855 at Fryer Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England[1][2][3]. He was the son of Mary Ann Hill of Fryer Street[4] and possibly Charles[5] (surname unknown).

On the 9th July 1876, James Charles married Elizabeth Randall at St. Mary, Warwick, Warwickshire, England. James Charles Hill, bachelor, gas retort setter of Saltisford, son of Charles Hill [sic] (bricklayer); and Elizabeth Randall, spinster of Luton, Bedfordshire, daughter of James Randall (gardener)[5].

James Charles' first wife Elizabeth died aged 44 years in 1888, probably due to childbirth[6][7].

On the 31st December 1890, James Charles married Annie Maria Day at St. Nicholas, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. James Charles Hill, 35, widower, gas retort setter of Stevenage, son of Charles Hill [sic] (bricklayer); and Annie Maria Day, 22, spinster of Stevenage, daughter of George Day (labourer). Witnessed by William Arthur Croft and Minnie Agnes Croft[8]

He passed away aged 55 years in 1911[9] and was buried on the 16th August 1911 at St. Mary the Virgin, Little Wymondley, Hertfordshire, England[10].

N.B. James records himself as having cancer. Annie is recorded as having been married for 21 years, with 10 children born to the marriage, all 10 children still living [sic] (Frederick Sidney Hill had died in 1905)[3]

Research Notes

It is possible that James Charles was the son of Charles Bird (b. abt. 1815 Shifnal, Shropshire) who was a bricklayer, lodging in Canal Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire in 1851. James Charles' uncle Edward Hill was living in Canal Street in 1861. There are no other bricklayers with the name Charles that appear to be living in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire from 1851-1861.

The birth registration of Charles Arthur Day confirms that he was born illegitimately, however his baptism five years later as Charles Arthur Hill records him as the son of James Charles Hill and Annie Maria Hill.

It is unlikely that Charles Arthur Day was the biological son of James Charles Hill, as Charles Arthur was born in November 1888, in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, whilst James Charles appears to still be living in Luton Bedfordshire in the September quarter of 1888 when his first wife Elizabeth gave birth to their daughter Winifred, and was likely still in Luton when his infant daughter Winifred and wife Elizabeth died in the December quarter of 1888 as their birth & death were both registered in the Luton registration district. However, Harpenden was only 6 miles away from Luton, so it is possible that James Charles and Annie Maria did meet and conceive Charles Arthur whilst Elizabeth was still alive. Autosomal DNA testing of descendants of Charles Arthur Day/Hill should confirm whether he was the son of James Charles Hill or not.
