Biography

Patty was the second President of Rockford Seminary 1884 – 1888

Martha was born in 1856. She was the daughter of Rev. Elias Hillard and Julia Whittlesey. ^[1][2]

She graduated from Vassar in 1778.

After graduating she taught mathematics at Vassar. ^[3]

In 1884 she was appointed the second President of Rockford Seminary after the retirement of Anna Peck. She instituted many changes to bring to institution up to date, including the creation of the honor code which is still in effect today. ^[4]

Martha resigned in 1888 to marry Andrew MacLeish.

They lived near Chicago. ^[5][6][7]

She formed the West Side branch of Visiting Nurse Association in Chicago; was an early contributor to school that became University of Chicago; served as board member, vice-president, and president of Woman's Baptist Foreign Missionary Society of the West. ^[8]

Martha passed away in 1947. ^[9][10][11]
