Mary died as a result of complications from being hit by a car.

I'm guessing that Mary's husband, Patrick, died somewhere between 1897 and 1900. This census states that Mary was and Patrick were both born in Ireland and not Scotland as Margaret stated earlier.

"McIlvaine, Daniel, Head, Age 40, Married 9 years, Year of Immigration: 1890, Naturalized, Born Ire/English, Parents both Ire/English, Occupation: Coal Miner,Owns a home,Able to read & write, mortgaged Mary, wife, Age 50, Married 9 years,Number of Children: 4 all living, Year of Immigration: 1880, Born Ire/English, Parents both Ire/English,Able to read & write Margaret, daughter, Age 24, Married 2 years, Born Pa, Parents Ire/English, able to read & write Gillespie John, son, Age 20,single, Born Pa, Parents Ire/English, Occupation: Miner in Coal Miner, able to read & write Gillespie Joe, son, Age 16,single, Born Pa, Parents Ire/English, Occupation: Miner in Coal Miner, able to read & write, attended school: yes Gillespie Edward, son, Age 12,single, Born Pa, Parents Ire/English, able to read & write, attended school: yes Rowe Earl, step grandson, Age 8, Born in Ohio, Both Parents born in Ohio, attended school: yes Rowe Walter, step grandson, Age 6, Born in Ohio, Both parents born in Ohio, attended school: yes." I think that Earl & Walter are Margaret's children but I don't know where her husband is at this time or why they didn't list her name as Rowe and not McIlvain. Also, John, Joe and Edward are shown as all McIlvain and not Gillespie.

"McIlvaine, Daniel, Head, Owns a home, mortgaged, Age 65, Year of Immigration: 1898, Naturalized in 1900 (?), Able to read & write, Born in Ireland, Parents both born in Ireland, Mother tongue: Irish (all 3 of them), Occupation: Coal Miner Mary, wife, Age 57, Immigrated 1880, Naturalized in 1895, able to read & write, Born in Ireland, Parents both born in Ireland, Mother tongue: Irish (all 3 of them) Gillespie John, stepson, Age 32,single, able to read & write, Born in Pa, Both parents born in Ireland, Occupation: Coal Miner Gillespie Joe, stepson, Age 21, single, able to read & write, Born in Pa, Both parents born in Ireland, Occupation: Coal Miner." Daughter,Margaret Gillespie-Rowe, not listed in this census may possibly be in Ohio or California. Son Edward Gillespie was also missing from this census.

"Mary Gillespie"purchased" her house back from Cecil Township because of debts left by her husband, Patricks death. "Whereas, the said Patrick Gillespie in his lifetime, and at the time of his deat, was seized in his demesne as of fee of a certain tract of land situated in Cecil township, Washington county, Penna described as follows: Beginning at the peg at south corner of land of Boreland Bros. thence along along the line of Jacob E. Ridgeway 362 3/10 feet to an alley; thence along said alley 349 7/10 feet to land of Boreland Bros.; thence along line of said Borelands 135 2/10 feet to land of Jacob E. Ridgeway; thence by said Ridgeway 417 feet to place of beginning.... Whereupon, it appearing manifest unto the Court aforesaid that the personal estate of the said Patrick Gilespie, deceased was not sufficient to pay his debts it was considered and ordered by the said Court on the 14th day of May A.D. one thousand nine hundred that the above described tract of land and set forth as "Purpart A" as set forth in said petition and as above described be sold according to the prayer of the petitioner.........sold the same to Mary Gillespie for the sum of $1120.00 she being the highest and best bidder."." It appears that Mary almost lost her house after the death of her husband. Somehow she was able to come up with the money to keep from losing it. Her husband, Patrick, had sold a 1 acre of the land to Thomas Daly before he died.

Craig Street, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213, Searched Nov. 12, 2002. "Dear Ms West: Research for the following report was done by Suzanne Johnston, volunteer researcher. Since the Gillespie family lived in the Cecil or McDonald area of Washington county, they probably attended St Patrick in Oakdale/Nobestown in Allegheny county. After 1892, they could have attended St. Alphonsus in McDonald, but St. Mary, Cecil was not established until later. Neither St. Patrick nor St. Alphonsus has any marriage records prior to 1909, so we cannot search for either of Mary's marriages. At least her second marriage could probably be found in the civil records of either Washington or Allegheny county. We found the baptismal information for all four of the Gillespie children at St Patrick. St. Patrick (Oakdale/Noblestown) Baptismal records: Margarita Ellenoram, born 24 Aug. 1886, baptized 5 Sept. 1886; father: Patricio Gillespie, hibernia, mother: Maria Hines, same; sponsors: Thomas Dailey, Ellena Dougherty. Joannem Jacobum (James), born 15 Jun 1890 at Millers Crossing; baptized 6 Jul 1890; father, Patricio Gillespie; mother: Maria Hines; sponsors: Patricio McCune, Elizabeth Daley. Josephum Michaelem, born 6 Apr. 1894; baptized 29 Apr 1894; father: Patricio Gillespie; mother Maria Hines; sponsors: Thomas Daly, Elizabeth Daly. Edwardum, born 12 Jul 1897; baptized 15 Aug 1897; father:Patricio Gillespie, hiberniae; mother Maria Hynes of the same place; sponsors: Martinus Nugent, Maria Nugent. There are no early death records for St Patrick, so we could not search for a record on Patrick in 1898. We do not hold death records for St Mary, Cecil. Since you did not give approximate years of death for the Gillespie sons, we could not request a search from St Mary's. 9. Washington Observer Front Page, !Newspaper Article: Mary Hines-Gillespie-McElwain (Copy of article), 27 Mar 2002, Washington Library, Washington Pa, Feb. 21, 1930 Washington county. "Aged Woman Victim of Hit-and-Run Car: Mrs Mary McElwain Dies at Cecil Following Accident near her home on February 9. Cecil, Feb. 20 - Mrs Mary McElwain, aged 70 years, died in her home here yesterday as the result of injuries received when she was struck by a hit and run driver during the evening of February 9. Mrs McElwain was walking along the side of the road near her home, returning from a shopping trip, about 7 o'clock in the evening of Feb. 9, when she was struck and rendered unconscious by the passing machine, the driver of which kept on going. Neighbors discovered the aged woman lying unconscious by the side of the road. The mishap had never been reported to highway patrolmen or other officers. Mrs McElwain is survived by her husband, Daniel McElwain, and four children. Coroner William B. Baker will investigate the case.".
