They had three children; Jessie B Hipple-Mitchell,[3] Jennie Hipple-Mitchell[4] and John Hipple Mitchell Jr..[5] About 1860 he took his oldest daughter Jessie , and Maria J. Brinker, a school techer, and ran off to California. (There were rumors that he and Maria eloped.) He eventually abandoned Maria and moved to Oregon changing his name to John Hipple Mitchell.

While still married to Sadie, and possibly Maria, he married Martha Elizabeth Price 25 February 1862 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon.[6] They had three children; Margaret Mitchell,[7] They had three children; Margaret Mitchell,[8]Mattie Mitchell, and Hiram Mitchell. Although John had changed his name, he did not change his behaviors, and he was carring on a five year affair with his sister-in-law.John H. Mitchell on Wikipedia
