John Mitchell Hipple was born 22 June 1835 in Washington Township, Greene, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John Landline Hipple, and Jemima Mitchell.
His first marriage was to Sadie Hoon about 1856 in Butler, Pennsylvania. Sadie was a fifteen year old student that he had seduced and gotten pregnant. They had three children; Jessie B Hipple-Mitchell,[3]Jennie Hipple-Mitchell[4] and John Hipple Mitchell Jr..[5] About 1860 he took his oldest daughter Jessie , and Maria J. Brinker, a school techer, and ran off to California. (There were rumors that he and Maria eloped.) He eventually abandoned Maria and moved to Oregon changing his name to John Hipple Mitchell.
He died 8 December 1905 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon[9] and was buried 12 December 1905 in River View Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.[10]
