  • Fact: http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch Harry Hirshberg was 5 feet 7 inches tall average weight 174 with a ruddy complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He had a scar on his right side lubar region. In 1929 living with Etha, they lived in the Rock Haven Apartment in Beckley Raleigh West Virginia apartment H6. The picture above is the cemetery Harry is buried in.. Harry is my biological great grandfather that I never knew. I was looking for my grandmothers birth certificate and I was having a hard time, because I thought my grandmother was Muriel Harline Solcum "Jackie". We all thought Paul Guthrie Solcum was my grandmother's biological grandfather. But after I searched and searched for her birth certificate I finally found a Muriel Harline Hirshberg. I called my grandmother and told her want I found and her words to me were " I wondered how long it would take you to find out. Then she told me of the story. Harry was a wonderful man to her mother, grandma Jackie told me he bought her mother furs. Great Grandma Elizabeth Jane Davis Hirshberg Slocum had a baby girl in West Virginia with Harry named Roma, she died as a infant. Great Grandma was devastated and depressed. Harry was an owner of a Dry Goods Store ( very successful), he decided to start a Dry Goods Store in Los Angeles, California, in a effort to get Elizabeth away from West Virginia and start a new. He bought her a home, she became pregnant with my grandmother and all seemed well. Harry traveled back and forth from California to West Virginia to manage the store. They decided to earn more money by making the basement of their home a basement apartment and rent it out. They rented it to a Paul Guthrie Solcum, he was a meter reader for the water department. Harry traveling back and forth was most likely a lonely time for Elizabeth and now she had the company of Paul Guthrie. They fell in love, Harry found out about it and left, and stayed in West Virginia and gave Elizabeth Jane a divorce. Paul and Elizabeth married and had a little boy name "Mickey" Paul Guthrie Solcum Jr. And eventually Paul adopted my grandmother but not until she was almost married to my grandpa Ed. He adopted her in Arizona, but I do not know why. Grandma told me he got in touch with her on her 16th birthday, and she talked awhile on the phone with him, she said she felt bad for him, but knew if she was to have a relationship with him it would hurt her mother so she never spoke to him again. When Harry's second wife died a lawyer from the state of West Virginia came to her home in Carlsbad California to give her money from his estate, actually a lot of money but grandma declined it because she was well off already and she would feel horribly guilty is what she said to me. So I do not know where that money would go. Because Grandma Jackie was an only child to Harry. I found an ad for about Harry in the Newspaper: Here is what it said In the Raleigh Register of Beckley ,West Virginia on February 14th 1932 it said NOTICE It is our pleasure to announce that we have secured the services of Harry "Shorty" Hirshberg, who will serve in the capacity of assistant manager of this store in the future. Because of Mr. Hirshberg's wide acquaintance and his incomparable knowledge of men's clothing we feel that we are very fortunate in having him associated with this store. "The Men's Store" P.B. Rogers Manager .Heber Street, Beckley ,West Virginia. On his gravestone it says Shorty.
