Henry Hitchcock was born on July 3, 1829, at Spring Hill, near Mobile, Alabama.[1][2]
He was the son of Alabama Chief Justice Henry Hitchcock and his wife, Anne Erwin. His father, Judge Henry Hitchcock, was a Chief Justice of Alabama's Supreme Court from 1836 to 1837.[3]
Life Events
Attended the University of Nashville and Yale University.[1] Henry was just seventeen when he graduated from the University of Nashville and only 19 years old upon graduation at Yale.[2]
Studied law with Willis Hall, Corporation Counsel of New York City.[1]
Studied law under Supreme Court Justice of Tennessee, the Honorable William F. Cooper.[1]
Co-founder of the American Bar Association in 1878.[1]
12th President of the American Bar Association in 1889.[1]
Elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society in 1882.[1]
Henry was a member of the St. Louis Bar for over 40 years. He was said to be not only an elegant writer, but also a very influential speaker. He was one who always met the needs of the community and the government in times of need. Henry was elected as a representative at the Missouri state convention in 1861. Without a doubt, he was a Union man, as civil unrest threatened the country.[2]
Henry Hitchcock passed away on March 18, 1902, in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 71 years of age.
