Biography

Edward was born in 1843.

He was the son of John Hobday and Elizabeth Phillpott.

He married Elizabeth J Brooke Hobday.

Edward was one of the first ones to answer the call for soldiers in the Civil War. He enlisted for a period of three months, on Apr. 18, 1861, in Co. D, 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out and re-enlisted for a term of three years, on June 19, 1861. He was wounded in the hand in the Battle of Cedar Mountain, VA, on Aug. 9, 1862. According to the source, "General Orders," War dept.: "The following named non-commissioned officers and privates, having been duly examined and declared unfit for further field service, but fit for duty in the Invalid Corps, are hereby transferred from their respective Regiments and Companies to the Invalid Corps, to take effect January 15, 1864, and from and after that date will be dropped from their Regimental rolls." This shows that he was transferred to the Invalid Corps, on Jan. 15, 1864. What transpired during the time period from when he was injured to his transfer, is at present unknown, but probably included some time spent in a Union hospital. The Invalid Corps was re-named as the 'Veteran Reserve Corps' in Mar. 1864. Edward served in the 3rd and 89th Cos., of the 2nd Battallion, Veteran Reserve Corps. The second battallion was generally for those individuals whose injuries prohibited them from all but the most mundane of duties such as cooks, guards, and desk duties. Edward was mustered out on May 27, 1865.

He passed away in 1909. He is buried in Woodland Cemetery, Cleveland OH.
