Thomas was born in 1814 in Ovington, Northumberland. He was the youngest son of John Hodgson and Sarah Huntley of Elswick House in Elswick, Northumberland.
He attended Eton and went on to Cambridge where he got his BA in 1837 and an MA in 1840.[1]
He lived at Ovington Lodge, Northumberland. He was described as a learned horticulturalist.
On 7 Jul 1841 in Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire he married Mary Anne Huntley,[2] a cousin through his mother's side. She was the daughter of John Thomas Huntley and Mary Blount. They had 4 children:
In 1851 he was living with his wife, their three sons and her three sisters in Berwick, Northumberland.[5]
He succeeded to the estates of Ovington, Stelling, etc. and to Coombe Fishacre, Devon (at the other end of the country), on the death of his brother, John Hodgson-Hinde, in 1869. An elder brother, Richard, inherited Carham Hall in Northumberland,
He adopted the surname of Archer-Hinde in 1869 to reinforce his claim to Stelliing Hall, Northumberland, previously left to his brother John under the 1836 will of Elizabeth Archer-Hinde. The change in surname applied to all his family.
He was a Justice of the Peace and F.L.S. (Fellow of the Linnean Society?) and for a time resided in Brooklands Avenue, Cambridge.
In 1881 and 1891 he was living in Ipplepen, Devon with his wife and her spinster sisters Frances and Louisa. He was a county magistrate. A niece, Mary Gray (presumably a daughter of one of his sisters) was living with them in 1881.
He passed away in 1911 at Coombe Fishacre in Devon.
The Huntley genealogy is complex. Sarah (mother) was the daughter of Richard, Mary (wife) was the daughter of John Thomas, presumably Sarah's brother, but no connections on Familysearch. Then there's the daughter-in-law Charlotte Georgiana, again described as son Thomas's cousin, so presumably a daughter of Mary's brother (named as George Maxwell Huntley, a Derby postmaster who married Sarah Anne Upcher). George's father was indeed John Thomas, according to the source (manfamily.org). He was vicar of Kimbolton, which of course is where Thomas and Mary married.
