Freerk Hoekzema was born October 26 1847 in Stadskanaal gem. Onstwedde, Netherlands to Warnder and Jantje Hoekzema. [1] Freerk married Mattje Bakker on Feb 10 1872 in Veendam, Netherlands. [2]
Natives of Veendam, Groningen, Netherlands, they lived on a barge on one of the canals. They made their living selling peat moss, which was used for heat. They sailed from Rotterdam, South Holland, the Netherlands aboard the ship "Amsterdam", and came to the United States in 1892 and landed at Ellis Island May 31st aboard the "Amsterdam". "Frederik", age 44, was listed as a laborer in the ship's manifest. Sailing with him were his wife "Maatje", age 43 and his children "Tetkje" age 18 , "Pieterje" age 15, "Ate" age 11, "Wiega" age 8, "Hugo" age 4, and "Jaantje" age 9 mos.
They settled first near Grand Rapids, Michigan, as some of the Bakkers were already there. After a few years, they located a small farm near McBain, Michigan. They had seven children, the oldest was 19 when they came to the United States to live.
Occupation: Canal Barge Peat Farmer (Arbeider).
Religion: Nederland Herformde (Netherlands Reformed or Dutch Reformed).
Illness Note: Died in Influenza epidemic.
