Margaretha (Gretje) Hoelck (aka Holck) was born about 1824 in the Duchy of Holstein,[1][2][3] the daughter of Cornils Hoelck and Marjen Pohlmann.[4] Her headstone lists 27 Jan 1824 as her date of birth.
Margaretha married Juergen (George) Kloppenburg before 1844, probably in Holstein, and they had the following children, born in Holstein:[4]
Detlef (aka John), b. 1844;
Cornils, b. 1846;
Abel, b. 1848, m. Henry Jordan;
Hermann, b. 1849 (possibly b. in USA).
They had the following children, born in America (see census records):[1][2][3]
Emma, b.1854, m. William Thiessen;
George, b. 1856;
Henrietta, b.1858, m. Joachim Schuett;
August, b. 1864.
When and where the Kloppenburgs arrived in America is unknown at present. It's possible that Juergen Kloppenburg arrived in America before Margaretha and children (Detlef, Cornils, Abel and Herman, who were born in Germany).[4] They were living in Iowa in 1850 or by 1854. Their son, Herman, who was born about 1850, may have been born in Germany (see Rootdigger), but Emma was born in Iowa by 1854.
Margaretha "wife of Juergen Kloppenburg" died on 23 Jan 1881 and is buried at Irving Cemetery near Irving, Benton County, Iowa.
