Powell HOFF (c. 1747 New Jersey or Virginia - will of 25 Mar 1816, York Co, SC, probated 1 Aug 1816, d. 13 Apr 1816, age 69, buried Beersheba Presbyterian Church Cemetery , Yorkville, SC,) is known from his will and census records. His parents have not been identified. See profile for Jonathan Hoof/Hoff for possible connection,
He md Prudence SUTTON (poss. born Piscataway, Middlesex Co, NJ - after 1820 York Co, SC), and they had at least one child possibly several others:
Jane ( - alive 1816) Son-in-law Francis CARSON ( ) may have been husband of Jane. it seems most likely she had not married and he was the husband of another daughter.
prob. Jonathan ( - before 28 Jul 1815 York Co, SC) md Agatha ??MACAW ( - after 1820, prob SC), and their ch incl Permelia McCaw; John D.; Amos; Nancy; and Alexander K (or R); and Elizabeth, who may have been a sister. Jonathan was in York Co, SC, by 1802 when he bought land on Turkey Creek from William and Jane RAINEY. Jonathan SUTTON and John RAINEY were witnesses.
prob. Joshua ( ) was living close to the other family members in 1810. His family has not been well defined. On 10 Mar 1813 his father-in-law, John PETERS gave him 200 acres, with the deed witnessed by Jonathan SUTTON and Powell HOFF.
Elizabeth (1789 - 2 Nov 1809, age 20, bur Beersheba Presbyterian Ch, Yorkville, Co, SC), unm.
Amos ( ) was of Prince William Co, VA, on 9 Nov 1815 when he purchased land from James and Margaret NEILL on Turkey Creek near the other HOFF families and possibly near Francis CARSON, who witnessed the deed. Francis ADAMS also witnessed the deed, and he was a witness to Powell HOFF's will. Alex MARTIN also witnessed, and he was also involved in other HOFF records. Then after Jonathan HOFF died, Amos HOFF bought his brother's clothes. No Amos HOFF was found in 1820, but there was an Alexander HUFF, with a young wife, who could have been this Amos.
Powell HOFF signed his mark, making the spelling of his name phonetic. He mentioned three persons in his will, his dau Jane, his son-in-law Francis CARSON, who was to be Executor, and his wife Prudence, who was to be Executrix. Prudence HOFF was appointed Executrix by the Court with Judge Benjamin CHAMBERS presiding; and she carried out the will provisions and paid all debts.
Interred in Beersheba Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Clover, York County, South Carolina[1]
Notes:
There was a Powell HUFF family in Prince William Co, VA, in the 1780 decade. There had been an earlier Paul (English for Powell) HOFF in Prince William Co, VA, in 1773. This Paul HOFF was said to have owed a debt and to have fled to NC.
1773 Prince William Co, VA. Paul HOFF owed a debt and was reported to be a fugitive in NC.
1778 Prince William Co, VA, Jonathan Hoof estate settled, 6 Apr 1778, with Mary HOOF as Executrix. Timothy PEYTON was security. (This has significance because of the move of a later Jonathan HOOF to York Co, SC.)
1782
1787 Prince William Co, VA, Powell HOFF had an adult male over 21 in his hh, one black under 16, 4 horses, and 2 cows.
