John Hoffman Jr. was born June 30, 1801 in Mount Bethel Twp., Northampton Co., PA. His parent were John and Sarah (McQuown/McEwen) Hoffman.

May 03, 1774], age 36; Sarah (McQuown) F age 26 < 45 [b. 1765 – 1784], [b. December 11, 1773], age 36 ; John M age 0 < 10 [b. 1801 – 1810]; William M age 0 < 10 [b. 1801 – 1810]; Phillip M age 10 < 16 [b. 1794 – 1800]; Mercy F age 0 < 10 [b. 1801 – 1810]; Levina?? F age 0 < 10 [b. 1801 – 1810] (BLM land purchase in Big Spring Twp., Seneca Co., OH?) He married Margaret about 1821.

Sarah (McQuown) Hoffman died August 28, 1829 (age 52 years, 8 months) and was buried in the Universal Methodist Church (UME) Cemetery in Briarcreek Township, Columbia Co., Pennsylvania.

Sometime before May 1830, John Hoffman Sr. married Lydia (Bowman) Mack.

1830

John Hoffman(Jr.) and Margaret, his wife, moved to Ohio before 1833 according to the date of their daughter Joana’s birth in 1833 in Ohio according to the 1850 census. Since they lived very near to Robert McEwen and Permelia (McEwen) Tankersley it may be presumed that they were cousins and John Hoffman is the son of John and Sarah (McQuown) Hoffman. Note that there is an item in John Sr.’s will that mentions that his son John died before 1848 when he actually lived much longer.

[Note: Martin FREES is the husband of Deborah(1) MCEWEN, William(1) MCEWEN’s sister. John HOFFMAN is the son of John and Sarah(1) (MCEWEN) HOFFMAN.]

1840

1840 census for Eden Twp., Seneca Co., OH page 162 has:

John HUFFMAN 0 0 0 0 0 1 ... - 2 1 0 0 0 1 .... John HUFFMAN age 40 < 50 [born 1791 - 1800] Margaret FREES wife age 30 < 40 [born 1801 - 1810] ________ daughter age 5 < 10 [born 1831 - 1835] ________ son age 0 < 5 [born 1836 - 1840] ________ daughter age 0 < 5 [born 1836 - 1840] ________ daughter age 0 < 5 [born 1836 - 1840] Margaret Frees is the daughter of Martin FREES and Deborah MCQUOWN. John is five names from Samuel HERRIN. John is the son of John and Sarah (MCQUOWN) HOFFMAN.]

March 1, 1848 a will was signed by John Hoffman (Sr.) then living in Berwick, Columbia Co., PA. He leaves his widow Elizabeth Steyer money she had when they married; $325 each to the three children of his deceased? son John Jr.; and 1/3 shares of the remaining estate to his children Phillip, William and Mercy Hill. William and Mercy were executors. Elizabeth (Styer) kept money she had when married plus $600 from will.

1850

1850 Census for Harrison Township, Henry Co., OH has:

356 362 John Huffman 49 M farmer $1,000 born PA, [b. June 30, 1801]; Margaret FREES 41 born PA; Joana 17, born OH (therefor they moved to Ohio before 1833); Philip 14 born OH; Jane 10 born OH; James M. 7 born OH; Phineas Hopkins 28 farmer born PA. [Note that Robert and Permelia Tankersley are no 358 and Robert McEwen is no. 359 on the same page. No. 351 on the preceding page has the James Sisty family with Jane (McQuown) Sisty living with them.]

BLM records have on June 1, 1852, John Hoffman (Jr) purchased 40 acres in Damascus Twp., Henry Co., Ohio in SESW Section 30 Township 5 North, Range 8 East. The certificate states that John is of Henry Co., Ohio.

John Hoffman (Sr) died June 27, 1852, (age 78 years, 1 month and 24 days) and was buried in the Universal Methodist Church (UME) Cemetery in Briarcreek Township, Columbia Co., Pennsylvania. He married John(11)’ s daughter Sarah MCQUOWN. She is also buried there.

BLM records have on December 15, 1854, John Hoffman (Jr) purchased 80 acres in Damascus Twp., Henry Co., Ohio in SENW Section 30 township 5 North, Range 8 East. The certificate states that John is of Henry Co., Ohio BLM records have on Dec. 15, 1854 John Hoffman (Jr) purchased 80 acres in Damascus Twp., Henry Co., Ohio in SWNE Section 30 township 5 North, Range 8 East. The certificate states that John is of Henry Co., Ohio.

These three parcels are adjacent to each other.

Attinburg, age 31, farm laborer, born Germany; Solomon Murray age 10, born OH attending school. 241 239 Phillip Hofman age 24, (born 1836) farmer, $600, born Ohio. This is John and Margaret’s son. “Historical Atlas of the World” including Henry Co., OH page 70 ½ has:

James M. HOFFMAN, son of John and Margaret (FREES) HOFFMAN, natives of Pennsylvania the former born in 1801 - was born (James M.) in 1843 and with his parents settled in Henry Co., Ohio in 1849. He was married in Henry County to Nancy A. Sloan in 1863. She was a daughter of Martin and Mary SLOAN of Maryland. Their children are: Minnie B. And Rosa M. Mr. HOFFMAN served in the 55th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the War 1861 - 1865. James M. HOFFMAN P.O. Napoleon, business: farmer, resides in Damascus Township, Section 30.

Jno HOFFMAN WAS the agent for the Chattel Tax for Henry Co., Ohio in 1862. (1)

1870

John Hoffman died June 3, 1876 in Henry Co., Ohio.
