Biography

Russel Holder took his family to Texas around 1895. His son and daughter rode horseback to school. One morning in route the two were ambushed by bandits, and the daughter was raped. The suspect was captured and a trial was set. Russel came to understand it wasn't a capital offense, so he took it upon himself to shoot the jailed suspect. Supposedly Russel was hung. No one in the NC family heard from him again.

in "The Texas Criminal Reports: Cases Argued and Adjudged in the ..., Volume 46" Scott v Texas decided 1906, a witness Russell Holder is the jailor at Beaumont, near Austin. --Don't know if this is the same man, but would explain how he access to shoot a jailed man. ^[1]
