Biography

Louise was born about 1860 in California, the daughter of Samuel and Georgiana Holladay.

In 1870, the Holladay family lived in San Francisco, California. The household included S. W. Holladay, 47, born in New York, a lawyer, with $75k in real estate and $10k in personal estate; his wife Georgiana C., 34, born in Washington D.C., whose father was of foreign birth; their three children, all born in California, Louise, 10, in school; Edmond B., 8, in school; and Ruth, 5; and two male Irish domestic servants. ^[1]

In 1880, the Holladay family lived at 181 Clay Street, San Francisco, California. The household included Samuel W. Holladay, 53, a lawyer, born in New York, whose parents were born in Connecticut; his wife Georgiana, 42, b. Wash. DC, whose father was b. England, and her mother was b. Virginia; their three children, all b. CA: Louise, 20; Edmund B.m 18, in school; and Ruth, 15, in school. Also living with them was a male servant, Ali Yo, 23, b. China. ^[2]

Louise Ord Holladay applied for a US Passport on 23 November 1891 in San Francisco, California. She was born 12 September 1864 (error) in San Francisco, the daughter of S. W. Holladay, attorney at law; and G. C. Ord Holladay. Louise was 27 (error), 5’5”, with light brown eyes and dark brown hair, and a fair complexion. She requested that her passport be delivered to (her sister) Mrs. W. E. Blackwell, NE corner Clay and Octavia streets, San Francisco.^[3]

Louise married Allan Messer in London.

They lived in London, England. Their daughter Ruth was listed on the England and Wales 1901 Census with Louise’s sister Ruth O. Brooke:

In 1901, Ruth O. Brooke, 34, born in California, a British subject, living on her own means; her visitor, Beatrice M. F. Ward, 40, b. UK; and Ruth’s niece, Ruth C. Messer, 5, b. Georgetown, a British subject; plus two female servants, lives in Farnham, Surrey, England.^[4]

In 1911, the Messer family lived in St. George, Hanover Square, London, England. The household included Allan Ernest Messer, 45, born in Berkshire, a solicitor; his wife, Louise Ord Messer, 47, a US resident; her sister, Ruth Ord Brooke, 45, a visitor, married, and a US resident; and four servants.^[5]
