George William Holliday was born close to the Kent coastal town of Sandwich in 1821. His parents were William and Hannah and William was a Game Keeper
In 1841 he married Sarah Anne and they went on to have at least 5 children, all boys
In 1851 George, Sarah Ann and 3 of their boys are still in Barham and George is a journeyman carpenter. It should be noted that a couple of houses away is another Holliday family headed by widow Elizabeth who is a property owner and her son, William is a Grocer
In 1861 the growing family of boys are living up the road in Bishopsbourne, with George, now aged 59 still a journeyman carpenter, and son John an apprentice carpenter
In 1864 George passes away leaving his widow, Sarah Ann and his sons
What is a journeyman carpenter?
Carpentry requires training which involves both acquiring knowledge and physical practice. In formal training a carpenter begins as an apprentice, then becomes a journeyman, and with enough experience and competency can eventually attain the status of a master carpenter.
