Biography

Gena Holman was born 14 May 1899, rural Menno, Hutchinson County, to Gudmond Holman and Johanna Evenson. She grew up in rural Menno, and attended the Norway School. She worked as a construction cook for those building roads at a time when it was done with horses.

She married Carl Gran on 14 January 1931, in Chamberlain, South Dakota.

Carl and Gena farmed many years in the Midway Community. She moved to Scotland in January 1981. She resided in the Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Wakonda, and a brief time in Sunset Manor, Irene, prior to her death.

Her husband Carl died in 1976.

She died Saturday Jan 31, 1987 at the age of 87 in Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, South Dakota.

The funeral for Gena Gran, in Scotland, South Dakota, formerly of the Midway area, was held at 2 pm Wednesday February 3 in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Midway, rural Irene, SD. With the Rev. Kevin Kline officiating.

Burial was in Our Savior's West Cemetery, rural Menno. Visitations were from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday morning at Ray Funeral Chapel, Yankton, and an hour prior to the service at the church. A prayer service was held at 8 pm Tuesday at Ray Funeral Chapel.

Pallbearers were her grandsons; Gary Johnson, Charles Gran, Chad Huntley, Kurt Johnson, Dennis Johnson and Martin Johnson. Honorary pallbearers included Lillie Anderson, Rosella Johnson, Alma Strunk, Esther Sorensen, Margaret Erickson, Ida Berquist, Marie Peterson and Mabel Sorlien.

Survivors are two daughters, Julliette Johnson, Rising City, Nebraska; and Mrs. Charles (Elsie) Huntley, Yankton; a son, Wilmer Gran, Menno; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.[1]
