Biography

Mary Holmes was the daughter of Samuel Holmes and Charity Bryant,^[1] and was likely born about 1761 in Scarborough, Cumberland, Maine. She moved with her parents from Scarborough to Machias, Washington, Maine between May 1764 and July 1766.^[2] She married Revolutionary War veteran Robert Cates of Narragaugus - now Harrington, Washington, Maine - on September 1, 1780.^[3][4] Robert and Mary's family were one of the four original families of Cutler, Washington, Maine ^[5] in about 1785,^[6] and theirs was one of seven households recorded as living there in the 1790 census.^[7] They were also residents of Cutler in 1800.^[8] She passed away in 1830. ^[9]

Mary was born about 1761. She passed away about 1836.
