Leland Joseph Honea was born on May 10, 1883 in Pickens County, South Carolina. His father was Andrew Thomas Honea and his mother Margaret L. Moore. [1]
Sometime after Leland's birth, the family moved to Anderson, Anderson County, South Carolina. Leland was only 14 years old, but he worked at the local cotton mill as a doffer (someone who removes "doffs" bobbins, pims, or spindles holding spun fiber such as cotton). [2]
In 1925, Leland lived in Green River, Henderson County, North Carolina. He was boarding with the Irving family. He still worked in the cotton mill industry as a twister hand (one who operated a lace machine). [3]
Leland married Dewey Hattie Owens on February 19, 1911 in Henderson County, North Carolina. [4] His daughter Estelle Blandina was born in 1913, son Alvin Leroy in 1914, son Ralph in 1916, and Floyd in 1919. He continued to live in Green River after his marriage on Gircania Road. He rented his home and worked as a twister in the cotton mill. [5]
In 1920, his daughter Thelma Lorraine was born, daughter Margaret Ellen in 1924, and Mabel Lucille in 1927. He still lived in Green River and rented a home for $4 a month. He worked as a caretaker in a private home. [6]
Leland died of acute bronchial asthma (a condition he suffered with all his life) on January 30, 1933 in Brevard, Transylvania County, North Carolina. [1]
