In 1920, John lived on what is known as Johnson Addition Street in Center Township, Sebastian County, Arkansas. John and his parents lived with his grandfather, John William Honea. John was the youngest child and had one older sibling (Mary Alice).^[2]

John married Violet R. Woodard on July 15, 1938 in Waldron, Scott County, Arkansas.^[3]

In 1940, John lived in Greenwood, Sebastian County, Arkansas. He rented his home for $3 a month and worked as a laborer in road construction. He had worked 34 weeks and earned $96.^[4] Later that same year, he moved to Plainview, Yell County, Arkansas. He worked for Russ Mitchell Incorporated and Brown Root Incorporated in Nimrod Dam, Perry County, Arkansas. At age 26, John stood 5 feet and 9 inches tall, weighed about 155 pounds, had a light brown complexion, with brown hair and brown eyes.^[5]
