Noadiah was the son of Joseph and Sarah (Lewis) Hooker of Farmington, born 29 August 1737; [1]married 1 January 1765, Rebekah Griswold, daughter of Major Josiah and Mabel (Belden) Griswold of Wethersfield, Conn.,[2] born 7 September 1744 at Wethersfield, Conn.
He was an officer of the Revolutionary War. He raised the first troops enlisted at Farmington, and marched in command of a company of one hundred men or more, the very elite of the vicinity. They arrived in Boston some three weeks in advance of any other enlisted men from Connecticut. He was commissioned a Captain by the Colonial Assembly and under that commission served in several different regiments. In 1776 he was commissioned a Colonel by the State Legislature and under that commission he served in command of various regiments until the close of the War. After the War he was for a number of years Colonel of the 15th Regiment of State Militia.[3]
He represented the town of Farmington for a great number of sessions; was for forty years a Justice of the peace, and a very prominent and active man in public affairs of both town and state. He was for many years Treasurer of the Church Society and took a very active part in the erection of the church edifice at Farmington. With Mr. Woodruff the architect and builder, he personally inspected every piece of timber that was put into the building. He went on horseback to Maine and there purchased a inspected the shingles for the roof and the carefulness of his work is attested by the fact that those shingles were not repaired or replaced for more than fifty years.[4]
Noadiah married Rebecca Griswold 2 January 1765 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. [5]They were the parents of eleven children: Sarah, John, Joseph, Sally, Lucy, John, James, Abigail, Nancy, William and Edward.[6]
He died at Farmington, Conn., June 3, 1823. His wife died at Farmington, Conn., November 9, 1816. [7]

At Farmington, on the 3rd inst. Col. Noadiah Hooker, aged 86. He was a soldier of the revolution, and was in service during most of the war. At the commencement of the revolutionary struggles, he marched from this state as Captain, at the head of a very large company of brother Patriots for Roxbury, (Mass.). He was in many important actions during the war; and had the command of a regiment at the capture of Burgoyne's army. He was for about 30 years Treasurer of the town of Farmington; was a Justice of the Peace, etc., etc. In all relations of life, both public and private, he discharged every duty with credit to himself and benefit to his fellow citizens.[8]
