Biography

Robert Hooper was born in 1828 and was baptized on 8th September 1828 at the Parish Church at Windrush, Gloucestershire. He was the son of James Hooper and his wife Jane Pates.[1][2]

Robert appears on the 1841 census,[3][4]Living with his parents James and Jane, siblings Maria, Charles, James and Daniel. His uncle John and Grandfather Thomas.

On the 1851 Census,[5][6]for Windrush, Gloucestershire. Robert is living with his parents, James Hooper head married age 50 a Labourer born Windrush, and Jane wife 45 born Barrington Little. Robert son age 22 Agricultural labourer born Windrush. His siblings Charles 19 Ag Lab, Windrush. James 14 Ag Lab Windrush. Daniel 14 Ag Lab, Windrush. William 10 Scholar Windrush. Henry 8 scholar Windrush. Ann 1 infant Windrush, and John Hooper Visitor unmarried 53 a Stone Mason born Windrush.

Robert Hooper married on 15th October 1864 in the parish Church, at Great Barrington, Gloucestershire to Marianne Watts.[7][8] Robert states he is a 35 year old bachelor a Labourer from Windrush, father James Hooper Labourer and Marianne Watts a 21 year old spinster of Great Barrington father Joseph Watts, Labourer. Witness are William Wilks and Mary Robinson. only Mary could sign her name.

The 1871 census of No. 23, Windrush.[9][10] shows Robert and Marianne with there first 3 children, Albert, Louisa and James.

Robert and Marianne emigrated to New Zealand in 1874. They booked passage on the ship BALLOCHMYLE which left London on February 25th 1874 chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company - Passengers were Robert Hooper aged 44 from Gloucestershire, Mary aged 31, Albert age 9, Louisa age 7 James age 5 & Annie 1year 3 months.

Once settled there they went on to have a further 5 children:-

In 1890 Robert appears on the electoral rolls[11][12]for Ashley, Canterbury, New Zealand. Robert Hooper residential Oxford, a Labourer along with his son James Hooper also a Labourer.

Robert passes away in 1899 and is recorded on the New Zealand Death Index[13][14]. December quarter 1899, place Oxford, Auckland, New Zealand.
