George was born in Clarke County, Georgia, on August 30, 1799, to Elijah Hopkins and Mary "Molly" Lyon. His father moved to Georgia that same year, from Orange County, North Carolina.
George married Sarah E. Looney in 1822, in Cumberland County, Kentucky, and around 1850, the family came to St. Clair County, Missouri.[1]
George and Sarah were the parents of 10 or 11 children, according to census records. Some of the children are listed in the 1850 U.S. Census:[2]
