  • First-hand information. Entered by Isabel Hopkins at registration.

I was born in Frankford Hospital in NE Philadelphia in 1929. My family lived in Mayfair, a NE section of Philadelphia until I was three years old at which time my mother and father divorced. I moved with my mother to Frankford in Philadelphia to live with my grandmother. My mother was a teacher in Philadelphia, my father, at the time of the divorce, was driving a bus between Philadelphia and Atlatintic City, NJ. My mother died when I was twelve and I continued to live with my grandmother and uncle until my grandmother died when I was 17. I continued to live in the family home until I was 26. My uncle was my guardian. I married on 22 April 1955 and was married until the death of my husband, Horace Sumwalt Jones, Jr. on 05 June 2006. During the course of my marriage we resided in Montgomery Co, PA which was a neighboring county to Philadelphia, In 2010 I relocated to Chesterfield County, VA where I presently reside. I had no contact with the Hopkins side of the family after the divorce but was always told that I could become a member of the DAR because I was directly decended from Stephen Hopkins who signed the Declaration of Independence and I have always wondered about this connection. The Hopkins part of my family seems to have been situated in the Burlington Co section of NJ. Since I retired at age 81 and moved to be closer to my daughters I have been trying to make this connection to leave a legacy for my family. I currently have two daughters and a son and seven grandchildren.

Hi Isabel, got your note about John C. Hopkins. I feel your pain, I couldn't find anything on him in New Jersey (partly because there are no birth records going back that far, partly because Hopkins is such a common surname). Do you know what county he might have come from? What about his marriage--when and where?

It is very tough to connect to the mayflower group. I have a leatherbound book dating my family back to 1635. You have to really dig and not give up.
