Biography

The daughter of Henry Miles Hopson (1866-) and Alice Elizabeth Hart (1868-1953), Ethel Hopson was born West Ham, England in 1896,^[1] being christened at St. John the Baptist church in Leystonstone, England on December 28, 1898.^[1] Her family lived in West Ham,^[2] immigrating to the United States in 1906,^[3] and taking up residence in Jackson, Michigan.^[3] Her father passed away and, in 1920, Ethel lived in Jackson with her mother and her siblings, who included:

3. Mary A. Hopson (1900-)
4. Edith Hopson (1900-)
5. Henry J. Hopson (1908-)
6. James Hopson (1910-)

Ethel Hopson married Edward DeFoe, marrying in Jackson, Michigan on September 23, 1921^[4] and having one daughter together. Her husband died suddenly at the age of 36, in 1926, passing away in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he worked as the projectionist at the Fuller Theatre. Ethel DeFoe returned to Jackson, Michigan and remarried, marrying Verne Manchester (1994=1884-1966), the son of Darius J. Manchester and Elizabeth Louisa Nixon, in Jackson, Michigan on February 25, 1929.^{[citation needed]} Verne Manchester had been married previously to Orrie Mae Hall (1888-1926), having four children with her.

Ethel, her husband, and their children made their home in Jackson, Michigan, where Verne Manchester worked as an upholsterer at a furniture store.^[5] By 1950, Ethel and her husband lived in Michigan Center, Michigan.^[6]

Ethel Manchester passed away at the age of 70 and is buried at Woodland Cemetery in Jackson, Michigan.^[7]
