Biography

Johann Adam was born on 24 Dec 1823 at 5 am in Oberwaldach. His mother was Catharina Hornbacher; his father was not identified (but may have been named Georg[1]) and at his 25 Dec baptism in Cresbach, his birth was described as illegitimate. His godparents were Rosini Martini (his uncle's wife) and Johann Adam Sackmann.[2][3][4] He as confirmed into the church in 1837.[5] Johann Adam immigrated to New York City aboard the clipper ship Electric[6][7] departing Hamburg and arriving on 23 Mar 1854. He was age 30 at the time. It appears that he was sailing with his future bride, listed as Sophie Christen, age 23 and listed consecutively to him, #105 and #106.[8] John and Sophia appear in the 1860 census, his birth place listed as Württemberg and hers as Switzerland, ages 36 and 28 respectively, with sons Edward, Herman, and Oscar. He was a tailor.[9][10] Sophie/Sophia died on 14 Jul 1868; the death record indicates she was born in 1833 in Germany.[11] By the 1870 census, Sophie and Herman were not listed with the family, but Adolph and Eugene were additions. Emily Turner, a 26 year-old tailoress was living with them.[12][13]

After Sophie's death, he married another German immigrant, 29 year old Anna Kollreuter, on 19 Feb 1871. The marriage certificate noted that he was a 45 year old tailor from "Kressbach in Germ." (Cresbach) and his father's name was Georg.[1][14][15][16] She likely died soon thereafter as he quickly married another much younger woman named Marie or Mary Hartenbach.[17] They had two more sons together, another Herman and August.[18]
