Biography

Cross of St George
William Horsnell was born in England.

William was born in England and his children from his first wife were born there. Family moved to New York some time between 1841 and 1845. His wife Charlotte Thompson Horsnell died in New York in 1845.

They moved to Iowa where he married a second time to Rebecca Jane Scott in 1855. His daughter also married into the Scott family. His wife Rebecca died in 1878. He remarried again in 1881 to Matilda Guthrie. The Census shows him in Iowa in 1885. His brother Samuel Horsnell also lived in the same county in Iowa.

He moved with his daughter Charlotte to the China, Louisiana, area which is near Elton in Jefferson Davis Parish. He had a younger sister named Ruth Horsnell Cook. She had a daughter Martha Cook Keys who moved to the United States, came to visit him in 1887, and decided to stay in the area.

According to family information, William was the first person buried in the China Cemetery, which is also known as the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. (Even though there are no mountains to be seen anywhere near this area!) [1]
