His parentage is highly uncertain. It is likely that he was not the biological son of Clara Alsop (nee Pomeroy) Horton. He may have been born to a previous marriage by Valentine Baxter Horton (1802-1888), or perhaps he was adopted by the elder Valentine and Clara. He is not listed among the children of the elder Valentine in the latter's biographical sketch in Norwich University, 1819-1911.[1]
He was born in Massachusetts. By the time of the 1850 United States Census, he was living in Mason City, Mason County, Virginia (now in West Virginia), where he was a farmer. The 1850 census also says that he was by then married to a woman named Margaret. Sometime between 1864 and his death, he appears to have relocated to Pomeroy, Meigs County, Ohio, United States.
His burial was at the Pomeroy Cemetery, Pomeroy, Meigs County, Ohio, United States.
