Biography

Tommie was born to Dee and Ida Hoskins on 18 October 1922 in Stanberry, MO. He grew up in Stanberry, enjoying ice skating on the Wild Kat River and hopping trains to travel to Wyoming and places West. He served his country in 3 armed forces: Navy, Army-Air Force, and the Air Force. He was a gunner on SBD torpedo plane off the USS Essex in the South Pacific during the Truk, Marianna Islands, and invasion of Okinawa. In Europe he was a ball turret gunner on a B17 and crew chief on C54, flying missions daily during the Berlin Airlift. Later, as father of 7 children, he entered college and earned his Bachelors in English from Kansas State Teachers College, magna cum laude. He completed his education with a Masters in English. He taught English and Journalism at Emporia,KS and Delano,CA high schools. He spent his summer vacations working on a doctorate at UCLA and traveling around the world. Due to health reasons, he retired from teaching in 1978. He died on 30 April 1984 in King City, MO and is buried there.
