Biography

Herbert Edward Houghton

Emigration to Australia. About 1873, when he was 15, according to his obituary.

Marriage. On 13th December 1880, he married Elizabeth Jane Rackham, at Jamestown, South Australia. Their marriage was registered in the Burra district. [1]

Widowed. Elizabeth died the following year, on 4th July 1881, aged 20, at the Wesleyan Parsonage, Caltowie, South Australia. Her death was registered in the Clare district. [2]

DEATHS
HOUGHTON.—On the 4th July, at Caltowie, of consumption, Elizabeth Jane, the beloved wife of Edward Houghton, aged 20 years.[3]

OBITUARY
Mr. Herbert Edward Houghton, of Narracoorte, died on June 28. He was about on Wednesday, but in the evening he had a paralytic Stroke and he remained unconscious till his death Mr. Houghton during his sojourn in the district for over 33 years was, by his business connections, brought into contact with all classes of people. He was of a kindly nature, and his open-handedness and geniality made many friends. He represented the Central ward for about ten years in the district council. He was born in Leicester England, on September 7th 1858 and came to Australia at the age of 15 years. After living in the Caltowie district for four years he removed to Lucindale. From there he went to Narracoorte, where he was in the employ of the Railway Department on the permanent way branch. A few years later be took over the railway refreshment rooms, and also carried on business as a greengrocer and confectioner, with skin and wool-buying. Afterwards he gave his time to the skin and wool dealing. Five or six years ago he went to Balaklava, where he conducted refreshment-rooms. He returned to Narracoorte three years ago and opened tea-rooms. He leaves a widow. There are five daughters and two sons, both of whom are serving at the front.[5]
