Biography

Effie (Houndshell) Henderson was born in Appalachia, in Kentucky.

Effie Houndshell or Hounchell was born on 25 Sep 1914 at Breathitt County, Kentucky, United States. She was the daughter of Robert Lee Houndshell and Mahalie E (Banks) Houndshell. Both spellings of her last name are possible as her brother used Hounchell and her parents appear in census records with this spelling.

In the 1920 census Effie (age 5) was the daughter of Robert Hounshell at Middletown, Butler County, Ohio, United States.^[1]

In the 1930 census Effie (age 15) was the single daughter of Robert Hounchell at Middletown, Butler County, Ohio, United States.^[2]

Effie (age 18), daughter of Robt Hanndskell & Mahata Hanndskell, married Reece Powers (age 27) on 24 November 1932 at Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky, United States.^[3]

They are seen in the City Directories of Middletown in 1933 and 1935. Both Reece & Effie were sales persons. In 1933 they are renters at 2013 Clayton Ave ^[4] and in 1935 they are homeowners at 2014 Clayton Avenue.^[5] It is interesting that two addresses are listed, the other being 1922 Winona Drive. It is possible they were separated by 1935 with Effie residing at the latter address. In 1937 Effie is seen alone at 2212 Crescent Boulevard and they are presumed to be divorced at this point.

Effie went on to marry Benjamin Henderson and they resided near Middletown. They have at least one child together. In the 1940 census Effie (age 25) was the wife of Benjamen Henderson at Middletown, Butler County, Ohio, United States.^[6]

Effie died (age 87) on 14 October 2001 at Middletown, Butler County, Ohio, United States.^[7][8] She was buried at Woodside Cemetery, Middletown, Butler County, Ohio.^[9]
