He appeared on the census of 1850 at Wayne, Maine, living with two children (Levi and Hanna) in the residence of his father, John House. His wife was not listed.

By time of the 1860 census (August 4), he was in Hardin County, Kentucky as a farm laborer.

He lived there until his death, in 1880 or after. In 1880 he resided with his son Levi House.

John House died while working as a railroad policeman - shot and killed by unknown assailant(s). He was buried at Sycamore Methodist Church Cemetery, Hardin County, Kentucky. He was also known as Gerry House in tax records of Hardin.
